Baby Furniture – Where to Start?
There is a huge selection of baby furniture at stores and online, all begging for your money! And you clearly want the very best for your baby. So where do you start? Cribs? Baby dressers? Changing tables? Cradles?
Set Some Goals
It will be important that your baby (and you!) will enjoy each piece of nursery furniture from the time your first baby is born until the last one outgrows the crib, so solidness and quality of construction are among your top concerns. When you are choosing baby furniture, carefully check to see how well it is constructed and how solid it will be when assembled. Clearly, if it’s made of solid hardwood it will be a lot stronger and last much longer than if made from plastic or some composite materials.
You also want your furniture to be safe, fun, and playful while at the same time helping to make the jobs that are performed in a nursery easy and convenient to do.
I recommend that you start small – get a crib, some sort of storage, and maybe a changing table. You can always add pieces from that beginning.
Cribs Baby Furniture
Obviously this is the most important piece of furniture in the nursery. And the category of cribs baby furniture is huge. When choosing a crib, keep safety features in mind. Your baby will spend a lot of time in the crib. Look for a one that is safe, sturdy, and fun.
Baby Dressers
This is really another necessary piece of furniture and it will be very helpful for storing baby’s clothes and diapers. Without some kind of storage, you’re really asking for an extremely disorganized nursery, and you’ll not enjoy that at all. You want to create a sense of organization while at the same time having everything you and your baby need at your fingertips and easy to find.
Changing Tables
Some parents ignore these, but I’ve found them to be a big help. They allow you to keep all the supplies in the right places. You will have a clean place to change your baby – a project that can be messy at times. You won’t have diapering supplies spread all over your house. And there is something about just setting the kid down on the floor or a chair to change a diaper that just seems like a bad idea to me for a variety of reasons. Okay, maybe it’s not in the same league as cribs baby furniture, but still give this one some real consideration.
What else might you buy? Well, that will be the subject of another blog post!
